Contra Free Thought, Outrage, and the Alt Right (Claire Lehmann)

A couple of days ago a new interview by The Rubin Report was put up with the name "tolerating even the most dangerous ideas." It was claiming that free expression means that one needs or should tolerate even the most vile ideas coming from people. Which is completely inaccurate and totally misunderstands what free speech means. Speech being free refers to people being free to use their own or volunteered resources in order to speak to other people.

It refers to the government and it's constraint against being able to stop citizens from using their own or volunteered resources to say anything they wish to say. It does not say anyone needs to give you their property to let you speak to any specific audience they do not agree with you speaking to. It says that the government cannot stop someone from using their own property or someone else's with permission of the property owners for saying something. It does not say said person has a right to anyone actually showing up or anyone providing them with a location to speak their ideas. 

Nor does it say that ideas are not powerful and that certain ideas are not indeed harboring dangerous philosophies which would be bad to be spread within the population. It is in fact free speech for someone or a group of people to peacefully persuade the audience away from a dangerous idea. It is also free speech and expression itself to be able to say no to someone using others property to spread ideas considered to be objectively bad to spread under their watch. It would be in fact a form of banning free speech if the government were to step in to make sure that someone could be forced to have to let dangerous ideas be sanctioned through the use of ones property to spread idea pathogens like those that Alt-Right members spread.

The Alt-Right is an evil entity which preaches a Whites only Ethnostate with a spectrum of views; ranging from bribing all minorities to leave the West for other Nations right up to Genocide. These are views that are not to be "tolerated" in any civilized and/or rational population. Free Speech is not toleration it is simply the idea that people can use their own resources or volunteered resources to speak. As long as one is not giving out legitimate threats or inciting infringements of rights such as initiating violence, fraud, rape or other forms of harm against others. It does not mean individuals or cooperating individual citizens in any geographical area need to tolerate any specific ideas under a "properly limited government." 

Ayn Rand - What Is Capitalism? (full course)

This 1967 lecture is Ayn Rand’s flagship talk on capitalism. In it she explains in depth what capitalism is, why it is often misunderstood and why it is the only social system consonant with man’s nature. She discusses the philosophical and ethical roots of capitalism, and contrasts them with the moral-philosophic doctrines that lead to rule by force. She then discusses progress under capitalism and how it is fundamentally different from the so-called progress of a statist society. Along the way, Rand takes up such questions as:

• What is the essence of man’s nature?
• What is the fundamental basis for the concept of individual rights?
• How is capitalism consonant with man’s nature? Why are other social systems not consonant with it?
• Why is serving “the common good” not a sound principle for governing a free society?

• How does a free market unleash man’s creative abilities?
• What is so often misunderstood about progress under capitalism?

Reality is an Absolute and so a Reality based Philosophy would be likewise.

One of the biggest criticisms of Objectivism is that it is too black and white. That is is a philosophy of absolutes and thus is dogmatic, insular, and, causes schisms between people. However, this is to not understand why the philosophy is very much indeed steeped in the black and the white. Reality itself is black and white. Something is either true or it is false. It is real or it is delusional. Is evolution true? The answer is yes or no there is no grey. Is the Big Bang a fact? Yes or no there is no in between. It is due to this that Objectivism is an absolutist in this sense form of philosophy. It is not all of philosophy, but, it is based on objective reality being real and our rational faculty being our means of survival both. 

Existence does exist and your consciousness is what is perceiving that which exists not creating it. If you agree with this you agree with a core of Objectivism as a philosophy and ultimately with the philosophy of Ayn Rand on this point. It is this outward view; this objective reality stance that makes Objectivism an absolutist philosophy in the sense that it requires accepting, and, not denying reality. Thus on matters of what is true or false in reality it relies on the absolutes of both of these concepts. This is why one can be and is totally consistent in both using Objectivisim as their philosophy; using the philosophy of Ayn Rand, but, also disagreeing viciously with her output and her application of her own philosophical methods. 

I do not want to go into another Objectivism is not Randroidism rant, but, it is not Randroidism. Objectivism is Objectivism; objective reality, reason as mankind's means of knowledge, rational self-interest and politically individual rights. This is what makes you an Objectivist and it is not agreeing dot and toddle with Ms. Rand on everything. This is also why you can be an absolutist on matters of Objectivism and also not be dogmatic, insular or cause schisms. For your outlook if you understand the philosophy is always looking outward to what evidence exists for what. Then taking your conclusions from there. Objectivism is the philosophical system discovered and named by Ayn Rand, but, it is not "whatever" Rand ever thought the application caused as an outcome. 

For example; you can truly say that sex is a good thing for mankind, but, what positions or types of partners is up to what is best for the interests of said individual person and the context of the situation at hand. Objectivism is absolutely correct on a fundamental level about the goodness of the nature of the act, but, how you apply it is up to the individual and their own contexts. Thus, Objectivism being used properly with full thought and not with hasty rationalization can indeed help you discover objective/absolute black and white truths about the matters of most importance to an individual human. The reason I am an Objectivist is because I find that the very core matches the absolute reality we call the objective reality. People might disagree with the ethics or the politics, or even the art. However, the epistemology and metaphysics is concretely true and well absolute.

Trump, Tariffs and signs of American Tyranny

This passed week Amy Peikoff gave a News Sandwich with some very bad news smack dab in the middle of it. It turns out unless it gets turned around by Congress a new system is on its way next month. The system known as "The Presidential Alert System." It will be Trump being able to obtain and then contacting all of them on their devices as a text message. This will give him direct access to the American people supposedly only for times of emergency.

However, we are talking about a President whom has publicly lauded as praiseworthy the idea of a President for life from various tyrannies around the world. He already has shown he is against freedom in his views on trade not being free across borders. He has the most anti-freedom to immigrate agenda of Presidents there has been since decades. He claims to be all about fighting the War against Islamic Theocracy, but, yet he plays nice with the Saudis one of the biggest sources for the funding of the groups that want Western Countries wiped off the face of the Earth.

He actually supports the idea of regulating Facebook and Twitter to the point they are no longer even owners or controllers of their own property. He refuses to cut spending that could be cut for needless areas of the Military budget and his Wall makes all of his tax cuts (which I fully supported) meaningless. You cannot cut taxes and have it be meaningful without also cutting the spending you are doing as well. His tariffs are also undoing any of the good things his numerous regulatory red tape and other cutting measures he did. Tariffs act like a tax as any economists can tell you.

Yet, this is coming from a consequential view of the matter. I find something much deeper at stake and that is the state of morality within the American Government. It is immoral not just impractical to have ANY Tariffs at all on goods. Just like it is immoral to not let immigrants that have passed screenings for having communicable diseases, having committed a crime or being associated with terrorist ideologies into the USA. Free trade for all; Unilateral and complete free trade is the only moral trade policy for a Nation to have. Free, but, screened immigration is the only moral immigration policy for a truly moral and free Nation.

The USA is already not free under this President and already having its individual rights squashed. It would be stupid of anyone to believe his new system will not be used for mischief. This sounds like something right out of Atlas Shrugged, or Anthem or We The Living. Ms. Rand would be rolling in her grave if she was seeing what Trump was doing to the USA. Ones only hope is that Congress and The Supreme Court take a different course before next month. Trumps Agenda needs to be stopped and the USA Constitution needs to reign supreme once more. The USA needs to return to a proper rule of law away from Trumps rule of men.
