An OAC Moment: Reason as a Value

In the clip, from the Year 1 seminar on Objectivism, Onkar Ghate discusses a student’s question about Objectivism’s view of reason. According to Objectivism, reason is man’s faculty of knowledge—it is his tool for grasping the world and guiding his action in it. But Objectivism also holds that reason is a value—i.e., something to be acquired or preserved. What does it mean to view reason as a value, as opposed to viewing it merely as a faculty or a capacity? Quoted passages are from the book Objectivism: The Philosophy of Ayn Rand (OPAR) by Leonard Peikoff.
